Wiles, (Mullins) Lucy

Bobbie Burgers is a contemporary Canadian painter. Her lush and Expressionistic depictions of flowers teeter on the verge of abstraction, bursting with bright color and laden with thickly applied, textural paint. “Flowers, to me, are the opposite of still,” the artist has explained. “Changing from minute to minute, they are perfect symbols for life, death, yearning, and beauty. My brushstrokes are layered with my own internal charges, depicting anger, frustration, softness, wanting, and more.” Born in 1973 in Vancouver, Canada, she studied Art History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Her work has been exhibited widely at home and abroad, notably including Art Market San Francisco and Equinox Gallery. Today, her works are in the collections of the Berost Corporation in Toronto and the Royal Bank of Canada, among others. Burgers lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.

A painter and a graphic artist of landscapes, figures, portraits and still life. Works in oil, watercolour and in various graphic media.

Studies: Briefly at the Natal Technical College under Professor Cecil Todd.

Profile: A founder member of the Queenstown Art Society. Illustrated Winifred Tapson’s book Old Timer and Brigadier Day’s Brigadier to Barman. Paints and glazes tiles and makes Xhosa figure friezes, prints and Christmas cards. 1946-54 lived in the Transkei, thereafter in Knysna, Cape Province. Since 1972 she has travelled to Madagascar, Mauritius, Thailand, Hong Kong, Italy, Greece, Israel, the UK, Germany and India. Married to Brian Wiles. Her earlier works are signed Lucy Mullins

Exhibitions: She has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1959 in SA and once in London; 1959 Pieter Wenning Gallery, Johannesburg, Wiles Group Exhibition; 1961 Pieter Wenning Gallery, Johannesburg, first of two solo exhibitions held there; she has also held numerous solo exhibitions at The Gallery, Leisure Isle, Knysna.
