Van Nazareth, Herman 

Born: 1936 Evergem, East Flanders, Belgium
Resided in SA 1965-74

A painter, graphic artist and sculptor.  Depicts landscapes, portraits, still life, seascapes, genre and figures, also creates abstract pieces.  Works in oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink, wash, pencil, charcoal, various graphic media, bronze, stone, ciment fondu and wood.  Began sculpting in 1965, 1967-71 a series of heads and nude torsos.

Studies: 1961-62 still life, painting, Koninklijke Academie, Ghent, Belgium; 1963-64 figure painting, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en die Hogere Instituten, Antwerp, Belgium; 1965-67 sculpture, Michaelis School of Fine Art, under Professor Lippy Lipshitz, on a bursary from the Belgian/SA Cultural Accord.

Profile: 1965 a founder member of the Artists Gallery, Several tapestry designs from 1970. 1965-74 lived in SA, thereafter in Italy and Belgium, visiting SA for several months each year.

Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1961 in Belgium, Denmark, West Germany, SA, Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy and the UK; 1963 Deurne, Belgium, first of over 20 solo exhibitions held in Belgium and SA; 1964 Deinze Museum, Antwerp, solo exhibition; 1972 William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley, solo exhibition; 1976 Pretoria Art Museum and Durban Art Gallery, Retrospective Exhibition; 1977 Durban Art Gallery, solo exhibition; 1982 Cape Town Triennial; 1985 Cape Town Triennial.

Awards: 1972 Special Prize from the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en die Hogere Instituten, Antwerp, Belgium; 1973 Bronze Medal for Painting, Ostend, Belgium; 1974 Anto Carte Prize, Palace of Fine Art, Brussels, Belgium.
