Tennant, Alice

Born: 1890 Paris, France
Died: 1976 Cape Town
Resided in SA from c.1922

A painter of flowers, landscapes, animals and figures, particularly of children playing.  Worked in oil, pastel, gouache, ink and watercolour.  Numerous drawings. 

Studies: Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris

Profile: Illustrated a number of children’s books, wrote and illustrated a children’s section of The Cape Argus. An opera singer.  1922-43 lived in Stellenbosch

and Jonkershoek, from 1943 in Newlands,

Exhibitions: Participated in group exhibitions from 1905 in Paris, France, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and in SA;

1922 Cape Town, first of several solo exhibitions; 1956 and 1960 Quadrennial Exhibitions.  

Represented: Hester Rupert Art Museum, Graaff-Reinet; King George VI Art Gallery, Port Elizabeth; Pretoria Art Museum; SA National Gallery, Cape Town; University of Pretoria; University of Stellenbosch.
