Solomon, Gladstone 

Born: 1880 Sea Point, Cape Town
Died: 1965 Johannesburg

A painter of portraits, figures and nudes.  Worked in oil and watercolour. 

A number of Sepia drawings.

Studies: Cope & Nicol’s Art School, London and the Royal Academy Schools, London, where he won a Gold Medal in Painting and

a travelling scholarship to study in France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands.

Profile: A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. 

A member of the SA Society of Artists.  1948

a founder member of the Brush and Chisel Club.  Designed the décor for Pavlova’s

“Alenta Frescoes”.  During WW1

he served with the Artists Rifles. 

1936-41 lived in Bombay where he was the Principal of the sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art and curator of the Prince of Wales Museum, West India.  Painted

a portrait of Viceroy Lord Lloyd, wrote numerous articles on art and made numerous illustrations for books on India; 1941 returned

to SA.



Exhibitions: Participated in group exhibitions 1903-40 in the UK and in Paris and SA.  

Represented: Hull and Liverpool Art Galleries, England; SA National Gallery, Cape Town

Publication by Solomon: Wrote a biography on his father Saul Solomon, a printer, publisher and statesman in the Cape
