Smuts, Lyn

Born: 1951 Bloemfontein

A sculptor of pieces based on landscapes and the environment and of figures.  Works in bronze, ceramics and cement fondu.  A graphic artist, producing etchings of SA iconography.

Studies:1969-72 Michaelis School of Fine Art, under Katrine Harries and Richard Wake, gaining a BA (FA) and being awarded the MacIver Scholarship in 1972; 1973 University

of Natal, where gained a BA (FA) with Honours in Sculpture; 1975-76 on a Belgian – SA Exchange Scholarship at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Ghent, Belgium, under Paul van Gijseghem (b.1935)

Profile: From 1980 a member of the Artists Guild, Cape Town; from 1976 a member of the SAAA.  1973 an assistant lecturer in etching

at the University of Natal; 1974-75 a lecturer in etching at the Cape Technikon; from 1980 a lecturer in etching and printmaking at the University of Stellenbosch.  1978-79 lived in New Haven, USA; 1986 visited London to study etchings. 

Exhibitions: She has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout SA; 1976 SAAA Gallery, Cape Town, solo exhibition.

Award: 1976 Tercentenary Award
