Serneels, Clement

Born: 1912, Brussels, Belgium
Resided in SA 1961-80

A painter of landscapes, seascapes, portraits, figures, nudes and still life, particularly flowers. Works in oil.

Studies: 1926-28 l’Ecole Sain-Luc, Brussels; 1929-33 under Albert, Philippot; 1934 Académie Royale de Belgique, under Alfred Bastien (1873-1955), where

he gained a Diploma.

Profile: 1936 received a travelling bursary to visit the Belgian Congo (Zaire), to which he returned in 1938

and where he lived until 1958.  Visited SA for one year

in 1945 and briefly on his way to the USA in 1948; 1951 revisited Europe; 1957 revisited Belgium.  In 1980

he returned to Belgium.

Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from the early 1930s in Belgium, France, Belgian Congo (Zaire) and SA; 1934 Kinshasa, New York, Houston, Mexico and Lisbon; his frequent solo exhibitions in SA are held at the Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg; 1964 Pretoria Art Museum, solo exhibition.
