Scully, Laurence

Resided in SA from 1938

A painter and graphic artist of abstract landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes.  Numerous painting derived from the desert.  Works in oil, watercolour, ink, wash, pencil, charcoal and in various graphic media.  Creates “photo-drawings”, drawing in black pen on a photograph to outline, highlights or alter the image. 

Studies:1944-45 part time at the Pretoria Art Centre under Le Roux Smith Le Roux; 1947-50 University

of the Witwatersrand under Douglas Portway, Charles Argent, Joyce Leonard and Marjorie Long, gaining a BA (FA); 1963 University of Pretoria under Professor F G E Nilant, where attained an MA (FA) cum laude.

Profile: An Honorary Life Member of the SAAA, 1969-74 Chairman of the Southern Transvaal Branch and in 1969-75 National Vice President; 1954 a founder member of the Contemporary Art Society. 1967 and 1969 Chairman of the Transvaal Academy.  1970-75 a Johannesburg Aesthetics Committee member.  1951-65 Art Master at Pretoria Boys High School; 1964-65 an external tutor for the University of South Africa; 1966-73 Head of the Art Department at the Johannesburg College of Education; 1976-84 Head and Professor of Fine Arts at the University

of Stellenbosch and from 1984 Emeritus Professor

of Fine Arts.  1961-75 chief examiner and later moderator of Matriculation Art Examination for the Joint Matriculation Board of the Transvaal Education Department; 1971 an external examiner for the University of Natal, in 1981 for Rhodes University

and in 1982 for Rhodes University and the Michaelis School of Art, Cape Town.  1951 designed costumes for the play “The Lady’s Not for Burning”, University of the Witwatersrand.  Directed plays at Pretoria Boys High School.  In 1957 created Multi-Image Performances, slide shows accompanied by classical music.  1973-75 a part time art editor for The Sunday Express, Johannesburg.  1978-84

a Trustee of the SA National Gallery, Cape Town.  1957 and 1986 European study tours of art and architecture.  Visits to Lesotho and SWA/Namibia.

Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1959 throughout SA, at the Venice and Sao Paulo Biennials and in the USA and West Germany; 1954 Whippman’s Gallery, Johannesburg, joint exhibitions held in SA and SWA/Namibia; 1965 Pretoria Art Museum, Prestige Exhibition; 1973 William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley, solo exhibition; 1974 National Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana, solo exhibition; 1975 National Museum, Bloemfontein, solo exhibition; 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1982 New York, USA, solo exhibition.

Awards: 1965 Oppenheimer Painting Award, Art SA Today; 1981 Photographic Prize, Republic Festival Exhibition
