Schimmel, Fred

Born: 1928 Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Resided in SA from 1948

A painter working in oil, watercolour, gouache,ink,wash, pencil and charcoal. 

A graphic artist,making screenprints and woodcuts.  1977-81 a seriesof landscape based screenprints.  1983 started experimenting in papermaking.

1946-47 Rietveld Akademie, Amsterdam

Profile: 1949-57 taught at the Polly Street

Art Centre, Johannesburg.  1952 launched

his own graphic studio and founded the Graphic Club of SA; 1956-57 lived in Melbourne, Australia, returning to SA via

New Guinea, Manila, Hong Kong, Thailand, Pakistan, Kenya and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe); also travelled extensively in Southern Africa and in Europe.

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1960 in SA, Europe, the USA,Israel and Australia; 1964 Egon Guenther Gallery, Johannesburg, first of c.40 solo exhibitions held in SA, The Netherlands

and West Germany; 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1985 Potchefstroom University

for CHE, solo exhibition.
