Pillay, Kuben

Article credits to: www.afriart.za.org

Kuben was born in Durban in 1969 and graduated with a MA (FA) and (Cum Laude) in 1995 from the University of Kwaulu-Natal.
His subject matter is the KZN landscape and plants. He is deeply influenced by the landscape painting tradition of the "Grahamstown School", as Prof.Tom Matthews was one of his lecturers and was a proponent of this type of painting along with the influence of Isabel van der Watt who was Kuben`s montor, friend and artistic guide at the University of Durban/ Westville. Kuben responds to the landscape emotionally and feels that the landscape reflects something spiritual. Spirituality not in the form of the divine, but an uncomprising attachment to nature. He is currently the art teacher for Northmead Secondary School in Durban.
Exhibitions: Durban meets Stuttgart, Expo Harnover Germany, Group exhibition African Ar Centre.
