Nico, Phuti

Born in 1977 in Attridgeville

Nico matriculated at high school in Attridgeville.  He always loved to sketch and draw at school. Nico spent his teens copying cartoons from teh Soetao and the Star newspapers.

Nico Phuti was an understudy of Lucky Sibaya and can be seen through his style and talent

Nico went with a friend to help him fit some kitchen cupvboards into the kitchen of Lucky Sibaya the internationally renowned artist.  While in Lucky's home he had the opportunity to view the artist's work on the walls.  He told Lucky how he was busy copying cartoons from the newspapers and would love to learn to paint correctly.  Lucky gave him paints and paper and told him to come back with what he produced so that he could see what artistic creativity he had within him.

He brought back the work and Lucky was so impressed with his line of colour and control of drawing that he said he would help him.  Nico spent two years learning with Lucky and started exhibiting at the Everard Read Gallery.

Nico Phuti's work contains symbolic meanings of his culture, like ceremonies, music, celebration and his ancestors.  His work is abstract and stylised similar to Lucky's work.  He uses bright colours in which he varies tones and often has more texture in the backgrounds.
