Pekeur, Selwyn

Bobbie Burgers is a contemporary Canadian painter. Her lush and Expressionistic depictions of flowers teeter on the verge of abstraction, bursting with bright color and laden with thickly applied, textural paint. “Flowers, to me, are the opposite of still,” the artist has explained. “Changing from minute to minute, they are perfect symbols for life, death, yearning, and beauty. My brushstrokes are layered with my own internal charges, depicting anger, frustration, softness, wanting, and more.” Born in 1973 in Vancouver, Canada, she studied Art History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Her work has been exhibited widely at home and abroad, notably including Art Market San Francisco and Equinox Gallery. Today, her works are in the collections of the Berost Corporation in Toronto and the Royal Bank of Canada, among others. Burgers lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.

Pekeur, Selwyn

Selwyn Pekeur lives and works in Paarl and is actively involved in promoting the visual arts in his local community. A full time artist since June 1998 Pekeur began his career in the teaching profession. In this capacity he was appointed convenor of the schools art project and was involved in organising workshops and exhibitions for children's art and young artists. Selwyn is a founder member of the E'Bezweni Art Group (E.A.G.) established in Paarl in October 1994. Solomon Siko, Kerwin Cupido, Dylan Denyssen and Alby Bailey are also members of the group.

A positive influence in the new South Africa, Selwyn chooses to explore humour as a force to bridge the cultural divide rather than redefine the fault lines that have separated the Cape communities of the past. Laughter heals. The viewer becomes a voyeur observing an intimate moment of family life on a sultry afternoon in a township home. Black is beautiful in this artist's vision. Selwyn's women are great inflated fantasies, titillating and festooned in colourful frippery.
Selwyn loves to experiment with different materials, media and techniques. He has worked as a sculptor, print maker and paints in oil and acrylic.

1957 - 23rd November Born in Cape Town.
1978 - Matriculated at Paulus Joubert Sen. Secondary, Paarl.
1980 - Obtained a Primary Teacher's Diploma ( P.T.D. majoring in Art) at Dower Training College, Port Elizabeth.
Worked with the artists Amos Langdown and Peter Clarke.
1981 - Started a teaching career in Paarl.
1989 - Studied part time for a B.A.(Fine Arts ) Degree at Unisa - incompleted.
1990 - Attended a sculpture workshop at the Daljosaphat Arts Foundation in Paarl.
1994 - Established the E'Bezweni Art Group.
