Oldert, Johannes

Born: 1912 Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Died: 1984 Johannesburg
Resided in SA from 1935.

A painter of landscapes, seascapes, still life, figures and abstract pictures.  Worked in oil.  A number of portrait busts in bronze, including those of the late King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1947 and Dr H F Verwoerd in 1960. 

Studies: One year at the Royal Academy, Rotterdam under Koos den Hartog; Natal Technical College under Merlyn Evans and Nils Andersen; briefly under Ernest Ullmann in Johannesburg and at the Witwatersrand Technical College under Eric Byrd; Regent Street Polytechnic, London under Harold Brownsword (b.1885)

Profile: A member f the NSA.  1935 lived in Durban, later in Johannesburg.  In 1949 he was living in the Cape and then returned to Johannesburg.  Travelled in England and The Netherlands; in 1954 he made an extensive tour of Europe. During the 1940s married to Elise Laidler.  Father of L Anton Benzon.

Exhibitions: Participated in group exhibitions in SA from 1938; held numerous solo exhibitions in SA and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
