Ntukwana, Hargreaves

Born: 1938 Johannesburg

A painter and sculptor of figures and township life.  Works in oil, gouache, ink, wash, pencil, charcoal, wood, plaster of Paris, clay and terracotta. 

A Witch Doctor series, a rural life series and a factory series.

Studies: Polly Street Art Centre, Johannesburg under Cecil Skotnes; 1955-56 African School

of Art, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe); 1960-62 privately under Cordelidos in Toledo, Spain; 1971-73

privately under Professor Mel Edwards, in New York.

Profile: Has lectured on SA art in New York and

in Switzerland.  1984 a workshop teacher at the University of Witwatersrand.  1979 designed clothes for “Black and White is Beautiful”, a modelling show in Germany.  A photographer and jazz musician who participated in the musical “King Kong”.  Designed the record sleeves for “Underground

in Africa” by Dollar Brand in 1980; “Did You Tell Your Mother” by the Cape Town Jazz Musicians

in 1982 and “Plum and Cherry” by Basil Manenberg Coetzee in 1984.  1984 designed a wine bottle label for a Swiss company bottling SA wine.  Designs

for rugs made in Lesotho and for Christmas cards.  1971-3, 1981-2 and 1985 lived in the USA; 1973-4 travelled in Europe; 1977 in Switzerland; 1979 visited West Germany.

Exhibitions: He has participated in several group exhibitions in SA, Europe, the USA, Lesotho and Zimbabwe; 1967 Adler Fielding Gallery, Johannesburg, first of over 15 solo exhibitions held in SA, France, Switzerland, West Germany, The Netherlands and the USA.  

Represented: Rutgers State University, New Jersey, USA; University of California USA; University of Fort Hare; University of Witwatersrand.

Public Commission: 1986 mural for the Italian School, Johannesburg.
