Motswai, Tommy

Born: 1963 Johannesburg



An artist of brightly coloured urban scenes of city people. Works in pastel and in various graphic media. 



Studies: 1980 irregularly at FUBA, Johannesburg and at Bill Ainslie’s studio; 1982-83 worked as an assistant to Kurt Lossgott, but mainly self taught.

Profile: A member of the Artists Market.  A deaf mute, who studied for eleven years (1968-79) at the Kutlwanong School for the Deaf, where he has also taught art.  Worked at Wynberg Pottery, Johannesburg.



Exhibitions: He has participated in several group exhibitions from 1979 in

SA and in 1986 in Monte Carlo; 1988 Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg,

solo exhibition.



Awards: 1985 Santam Bursary; 1987 Volkskas Atelier Merit Prize;

1987 Sol Plaatjies Graphic

Art Award; 1987 Excelsior Award

Represented: Johannesburg Art Gallery; SA National Gallery, Cape Town; University of South Africa.
