Matsoso, Leonard

Born: c.1949 Soweto, Johannesburg.

An artist depicting mythological animals, tribal rituals, myths, African legends, abstracted figures and urban life.  Has worked in ink, conté, mixed media and 

in oil pastel. 

Studies:1962-69 part time at the Jubilee Centre, Johannesburg, under Cecil Skotnes, Sydney Kumalo, Bill Hart and Ezrom Legae; 1972 part time at the Bill Ainslie Studio.

Profile: Large scale works from 1975. 1972 visited London, Paris and Rome, having won the UTA Pavement Art Competition Travel Prize.

Exhibitions: He has participated in group exhibitions from 1970 in SA, the USA,

West Germany, Australia and in Sao Paulo, Athens and London; 1971 Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, solo exhibitions; 1971 Building Design Centre, Preston UK, joint exhibition with Winston Saoli and Cyprian Shilakoe Maqhubela and Sydney Kumalo; 1979 Contemporary African Art in SA, touring; 981 Standard Bank, Soweto,
