Maambo, Reston

Restone Maambo was born in Zambia, in 1980. His work is about considering life experience and the ways of then artistically interpreting life that surrounds him. His paintings have reminiscent aspects, looking back at childhood in his subject matter and uses of unusual materials in his works.

 

Maambo was first interested in illustrations found in newspapers and comics at the age of 5. His passion for creativity and art lead him to move to Cape Town to study further and he was awarded numerous prizes as he studied at Ruth Prowse. He graduated in 2008 and has since pursued his career, focusing on painting concerned with the human form and its presence in different environments.

Reston was born in Lusaka, The capital City of Zambia. At the early eage of six, Reston already considered himself an artist, which he says affected his academic studies. He draws his inspiration from his surroundings and community but mainly from his peers and fellow artists, which whom he spends the majority of his time.



Reston first started painting in oil in 2000, struggling

at first, but has since exhibited in may exhibitions in Zambia. He was nominated for the three upcoming artists National awards in 2003 and 2004, won first place in a fund raising exhibition that was organised by a Catholic Church for the construction of their Cathedral.



Since coming to South Africa, Reston's work received a lot of attention and has already been added to many  private collections. His work is mainly that of African people in rural settings, depicting everyday activities. A group of African woman selling their trade, a young woman braiding her friends hair as she lays contently on her lap. All inflict a feeling of lightheartedness yet are true, real moments caught in time.



Restons 's wildlife images are also to be noted. The vision, composition and paint techniques used

a different and mature- as is his use of muted color.



Reston currently lives between South Africa and Zambia. His youthful enthusiasm, confidence and unique style are sure indications that his work will continue to develop and sell to wide and varied market.
