Macala, Ben

Born: 1938 Bloemfontein

Both a painter and sculptor of figures, urban life

and abstract pieces.  Works in oil, pencil, pastel, conté, charcoal, bronze, stone and ciment fondu.

Studies: Under Ephraim Ngatane; one year

at the Jubilee Art Centre, Johannesburg,

under Sydney Kumalo and Cecil Skotnes.

Profile: Taught art at the YWCA.  1980 went

to Greece to represent South African artists.

Exhibitions: He has exhibited throughout SA and

in West Germany, Greece, the USA, Switzerland, Italy and the UK; 1965 Piccadilly Gallery, London, African Painters and Sculptors from Johannesburg; 1979 Contemporary African Art in SA, touring; 1981 Standard Bank, Soweto, Black Art Today Exhibition.

Represented: King George VI Art Gallery,

Port Elizabeth; SA National Gallery, Cape Town; University of Bophuthatswana;

University of Fort Hare.
