Born: 1938 Johannesburg

A painter and sculptor of figures, heads and animals.  Works in oil, conté, bronze, clay and mixed media.  1977-78 “Chicken” series; 1979 “Freedom is Dead” series. 

Studies: 1959-60 Polly Street Art Centre, 1960-64 Jubilee Centre, Johannesburg, under Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo; 1970 gained a travel scholarship from the US Exchange Programme; 1972 awarded a bursary from the Merit Grant Fund, USA

Profile: 1969 a member of the Amadlozi 69 Group.  1964-69 an instructor at the Jubilee Art Centre; a part time teacher at FUBA.  1972-74 Director of the African Music and Drama Association Art Project.  1964 visited Central Africa.

Exhibitions: 1965 Egon Guenther Gallery, Johannesburg, first of several solo exhibitions in SA; he has participated in many group exhibitions in SA from 1966 and in Belgium, The Netherlands, West Germany and South America; 1966 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1972 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1979 Contemporary African Art in SA; 1981 Standard Bank, Soweto, Black Art Today Exhibition; 1982 National Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana, Exhibition of SA Art; 1985 Tributaries, touring SA and West Germany; 1985 Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, joint exhibition with Sydney Kumalo, Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa.

Awards: 1967 Oppenheimer Sculpture Prize, Art SA Today; 1979 Honourable Mention for Drawing, Valparaiso Bienale, Chile
