Kumalo, Sydney

Born: 1935 Johannesburg

A sculptor and a painter of figures, heads, animals and mythological beasts.  Works in bronze, terracotta, pencil, charcoal, watercolour, gouache and conté.

Studies: 1952-57 Polly Street Art Centre, Johannesburg, under Cecil Skotnes.  Studied sculpture under Edoardo Villa.

Profile: 1957-65 a founder member of the Amadlozi Group.  1960 taught art and, on Cecil Skotnes’ resignation in 1961, too over as official Art Organiser and Director of the Jubilee Social Centre Art School for four years (this had previously been called the Polly Street Art Centre).

Exhibitions: He has participated in group exhibitions from 1957 in SA, Europe, South America and Australia; 1962 Egon Guenther Gallery, Johannesburg, first solo exhibition; 1965 Piccadilly Gallery, London, African Painters and Sculptors from Johannesburg; 1966 Grosvenor Gallery, London, joint exhibition with Cecil Skotnes; 1979 Contemporary African Art in SA, touring exhibition; 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1981 Standard Bank, Soweto, Black Art Today Exhibition; 1982 National Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana, Exhibition of SA Art; 1985 Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, joint exhibition with Ezrom Legae, Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa; 1985 Cape Town Triennial; 1986 Alliance Francaise, Pretoria, Historical Perspective of Black Art in SA Exhibition; 1988 Johannesburg Art Gallery, Vita Art Now.

Awards: 1963 Phillip Frame Award, Art SA Today, NSA Gallery; 1967 Bronze Medal, Transvaal Academy and a travel bursary for three months in the USA and Europe as a guest of USSALEP.
