Krige, Francois

Born: 1913 Uniondale, Cape Province

A painter of landscapes, seascapes, still life, wildlife, portraits and figures.  Works in oil, watercolour, ink, pencil and charcoal. 

A woodcarver and graphic artist. 

Studies: Michaelis School of Fine Art, under H V Meyerowitz and at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en de Hogere Instituten, Antwerp, Belgium; 1934-37 in Spain under Vasquez Diaz sponsored by Victor Kark.

Profile: A member of the New Group and of the SAAA.  1941-45 an Official SA War Artist in Egypt and Italy.  Illustrated Jaffie, by Eitemal (W J du P Erlank); Sol y sombre, by Uys Krige, with his Spanish drawings; Their Secret Ways, by V Pohl and Wit Wyne van Suid Afrika, by W A de Klerk.  He has travelled in Europe and in SWA/Namibia.  Son of the writer Sannie Uys and brother of the poet Uys Krige.

Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in SA, one in West Germany and one

in Venice, Italy; joint exhibitions with Geoffrey Long; 1934 Johannesburg, first of numerous solo exhibitions held in SA; 1948 Tate Gallery, London, SA Art Exhibition; 1960 Quadrennial Exhibition.

Award:  1949 Medal of Honour, SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns
