Koloane, David

Born: 1938 Alexandra, Johannesburg

A painter of figures and abstract pictures. 

Works in acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink,

wash, pencil and charcoal. 

Studies: 1974-77 under Bill Ainslie; 1983 Birmingham Polytechnic, England; 1983 attended the Triangle Workshop, New York, USA; 1984-85 University of London on a British Scholarship gaining a Diploma in Museum Studies. 

Profile: 1977 a co-founder of the first Black art gallery in Johannesburg.  From 1981 a member

of FUBA, 1981083 Head of the FUBA Fine Arts Department, 1983-85 compiler of the FUBA Newsletter Catalogue and from 1986 to 1988

the gallery curator.  1983 a member of the Triangle International Artists Workshop, New York, USA.  1981-82 articles by him were published in Bonanza and Staffrider periodicals; 1986-88 numerous articles for various periodicals including Art. 1985 on the panel of judges of the African Arts Festival, University of Zululand, a co-ordinator of the Botswana Arts Festival, a co-leader of the USSALEP-FUBA workshop and on the judging panel of the SANCA Poster Competition. 1983-85 lived in London.   1983-84 visited New York; 1983 Birmingham, England.

Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1975 in SA, the USA, the UK and in Paris, France; 1976 Johannesburg, first solo exhibition; 1982 National Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana, Exhibition of SA Art; 1985 Tributaries, touring SA and West Germany; 1987 Johannesburg Art Gallery, Vita Art Now; 1987 Johannesburg Art Foundation, joint exhibition with Bill Ainslie, Dumisani Mabaso, Tony Nkotsi and Anthusa Sotiriades.  

Represented: National Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana; University of Zululand.
