Koenig, Dezso

Died: 1972 Johannesburg
Resided in SA from 1931

A painter of figures, still life, city scenes and landscapes.  Worked in oil and crayon. 

Studies: 1914-17 Hungarian Royal Academy, where he won a scholarship for further studies

in Germany, France and Italy.

Profile: 1948 a founder member of the Brush and Chisel Club, also a member of the Transvaal Art Society.  1939-45 served in the SA Armed Forces.  During this period he was involved with art therapy for convalescing soldiers in Egypt and Johannesburg.  1957 designed the set for

a production of “Madame Butterfly” in the City Hall, Johannesburg.  1955-56 lived in London, returning there in 1962.

Exhibitions: Participated in group exhibitions from 1918 in Europe, Egypt, the UK, the USA and SA; 1937 Durban Art Gallery, first of many solo exhibitions in SA; 1955 Imperial Institute, London, solo exhibition; 1972 Johannesburg, solo exhibition

Represented: Africana Museum, Johannesburg; Pretoria Art Museum; SA National Museum

of Military History, Johannesburg.
