Goldblatt, Sidney

Born: 1919 Johannesburg
Died: 1979 Magoebaskloof, Northern Transvaal

A highly versatile artist.  Painted cityscapes, birds, animals, landscapes, still life, genre and figures.  From 1958 became more abstracted by 1970 abstract.  Worked in oil, gouache and acrylic.  1955 began working with linoleum.  Non-figurative sculpture in silver, aluminium and both green and black bronze.  From 1966 a series of monochrome collages in silver or brown, made of oil paint, linoleum and hessian.  From 1972 worked in acrylic and mixed media.

1940 evening classes at the Witwatersrand Technical College under Eric Byrd and James Gardner; 1949 Anglo French Art Centre, London; 1950 under Andre Lhote (1885-1962) and Fernand Leger (1881-1955) in Paris; 1952 sculpture at the Sir John Cass School of Art, London under Edward Copnall

 

Profile:

1953 opened Gallery Independent, Johannesburg, with nine others; 1954 founded the Giotto Art Academy, Johannesburg, with Ina Mansch; 1955 began his own private art school.  A Committee Member of the Transvaal Art Society.  A judge on Artists of Fame and Promise Exhibitions.  1977 designed wine labels for Rebel Bottle Store.  1951 visited Italy; 1957-58 lived for six months in Marbella, Spain, also visited Italy, Switzerland, and France and spent three months in England; 1969 visited Israel, the Greek Islands, Athens, Istanbul and London; 1972 visited Toronto, the USA and headed an art tour of Europe; 1975 visited Scandinavia; 1979 visited SWA/Namibia. 

 

Exhibitions:

1948 Jewish Guild Memorial Hall, Johannesburg, first of 15 solo exhibitions held in SA, The Netherlands and Israel; participated in group exhibitions from 1953 in Yugoslavia, Belgium, Italy, Zimbabwe, West Germany, the USA, Italy, Brazil and SA; 1956, 1960 and 1964 Quadrennial Exhibitions; 1979 Rand Afrikaans University, Prestige Exhibition; 1980 Atlantic Art Gallery, Cape Town, Retrospective Exhibition of SWA/ Namibian works; 1981 Pretoria Art Museum,

Retrospective Exhibition.

 

Awards:

1967 Cambridge Shirt Award on the Art SA Today Exhibition, Durban.
