Gauthier, Joanne

Born in 1962 in Trois Rivières, Quebec, Joanne studied at Université de Quebec à Trois Rivieres. After graduating from university, Joanne became interested in women and their concerns and started painting female figures. Using oil washes directly on canvases pre-coated with acrylic paste, she creates wonderfully rich, textural worlds. Raw or blended, oil is diluted, but never mixed with white. The juxtaposition of colours, expecially radiant reds and deep blues, reminds one of stained glass and illumination of the twelfth century. The flowers, vegetation and arabesques lend her work an early 20th century art nouveau flavour. Despite these resemblances to the past, subjects are resolutely contemporary. Joanne is inspired by nature, the evolving status of women and a passion to "open up the path of the soul." With brilliant colour, emotional tenor and lyrical image, Joanne achieves a stunning visual symphony of inner reflection and outer harmony.
