Duma, Sibusiso

Article credits to: African Art Center

Date of Birth: 1978
Place of Birth: Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal

As a young boy growing up in a Durban township, Sibusiso enjoyed drawing pictures of animals and cars. His Primary School teacher would often reprimand him for drawing during class lessons.

He was unable to receive professional art tuition at a tertiary institution. Fortunately for Sibusiso, his older brother (a musician) was a friend of Trevor Makhoba- musician and painter. The late Trevor Makhoba (a well known Durban artist) invited Sbusiso to his house where he received informal art mentorship for 4 years together with his peer, Welcome Danca. This marked the beginning of Sibusiso’s successful art career.

Sibusiso enjoys painting; he utilizes

the medium to express himself and represent his surroundings.

His subject matter includes serene landscapes sometimes inhabited by individuals,

and depicting his everyday life scenes. His paintings are either executed in fine painterly marks or in a pointillism technique.  Sibusiso’s work is reputable amongst collectors; his work is available in major private and public collections in South Africa.

Duma Sibusiso

Sibusiso Duma is a young artist who is actively working within the Durban art scene. His artistic abilities were noticed and cultivated by the late Trevor Makhoba through his Philange Art Project based in Umlazi township south of Durban.

Makhoba had built a studio space behind his house, where he invited young artists to make their work and enhance their individual practices. Duma worked under Makhoba's tutelage for a number of years, and has since shared a stage with Makhoba and another former student, Welcome Danca. Together they have held a number of exhibitions at the African Art Centre in Durban.Although Duma has built on his own style and visual language, the influence of Makhoba is undeniable. He has defined his work with the ability to treat surfaces, subject, space and colour with a unique aesthetic understanding, as he alludes to social issues and does not directly depict them
