​Contemporary South African Art

Susan Helm Davies was born in the then W. Transvaal in 1945, and went to schools primary and secondary there. Trained by Jack and Jane Heath at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg - Fine Arts Department, 1963 - 1966. Taught Art in schools in Durban and Pietermaritzburg before returning to the Department of Fine Arts where she taught for 18 years.

She has pursued many interests like calligraphy and heraldry, besides her interest in and use of various media like gouache, wax engraving, acrylic and oil painting. Her subject matter is usually chosen for it's humble origins e.g. still-life and landscape. Her paintings are generally small and detailed, an attempt to convey the extraordinary in the ordinary. Her works are to be found in public collections e.g. Tatham and Durban Art galleries; and in private collections in S.A. and overseas.
