Coleman, Trevor

Born: 1936 Johannesburg

A painter and graphic artist of landscapes, still life and abstract pictures.  Works in oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink, wash, pencil, charcoal and in various graphic media, particularly monotypes. 

1960-66 organic textured paintings;

1966-72 hard edge paintings;

1972-83 landscape and collage paintings.  Several large series:

1978 “SWA”;

1981-82 “India – Inspiration”;

1985 “Seychelles”.



Studies:

1958-60 Witwatersrand Technical College under Professor Robert Bain (qv);

1961 part time at the Central School of Art, London.



Profile:

1961-65 a member of the Hampstead Art Society; a member of the SAAA of which he was a Transvaal Committee Member

1967-73.  An art teacher in 1966 at The Visual Arts Research Centre, Johannesburg; has also taught privately. 

1977-83 editor of Gallery magazine, Johannesburg.  A potter and a photographer.  1961-65 lived in London.  Visited India in 1978, 1979 and 1980; Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka in 1980; Morocco in 1981 and Australia in 1982.

 

Exhibitions: He has participated in many group exhibitions from 1959 in SA and the UK; 1961 London, first of eight solo exhibitions held in London and 11 held in SA.

Represented: Johannesburg Art Gallery; Museum of Modern Art, New Delhi, India; Pietersburg Collection; Rand Afrikaans University; University of the Witwatersrand; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England.
