Cheales, Richard

Born: 1922 New Agatha, near Tzaneen,

Northern Transvaal

A painter of landscapes, seascapes, portraits,

still life and figures.  Drawings of buildings

in Johannesburg, sketches of artists. A series

of Lesotho scenes.Works in watercolour and ink.
Studies: Whilst still at high school took lessons from Joy Krause (qv).
Profile: In 1961 “Basuto Market” was reproduced in the SATOUR calendar.  In 1986 he produced

a series of paintings of Johannesburg to mark

its centenary year.  A journalist and art critic

for various periodicals and Johannesburg newspapers, 1963-68 for Die Vaderland,

1968-76 for The Star, and 1976-87 for The Citizen. 

He has lived in Johannesburg since 1938.
Exhibitions: He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in SA; 1944 Gainsborough Galleries, Johannesburg, first of numerous

solo exhibitions.
