Catherine, Norman

Born: 1949 East London

 

An artist of genre, landscapes, figures and animals.  Works in oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache, ink, wood, fibreglass, airbrush, wire, metal, “found objects” and in various graphic media.

 

Studies:

1967-69 East London Technical College under Jack Lugg (qv)
 

Profile:

1973 began collaboration on Fook Island concept with Professor Walter Battiss (qv). 

1949-70 lived in East London, thereafter in the Transvaal.  1977 visited the USA and Europe,

1979 and 1980 visited the USA.  Between 1982

and 1986 spent a total of two years working

in New York and Los Angeles, USA.

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1969 held throughout SA and in Italy, France, Switzerland, the UK, West Germany and the USA; 1969 Herbert Evans Gallery, Johannesburg, first of 19 solo exhibitions held in SA, SWA/Namibia, The Netherlands and the USA; 1979 Rand Afrikaans University, Retrospective Exhibition 1969-79; 1981 Republic Festival Exhibition; 1985 Cape Town Triennial; 1985 Tributaries, touring SA and West Germany; 1987 and 1988 Johannesburg Art Gallery, Vita Art Now.

1973 Cambridge Shirt Award, Art SA Today, Durban; 1981 Graphic Award, Republic Festival Exhibition.
