Katunga Carimbwe

Carimbwe, as he likes to refer to himself, was born in Mavinga, Angola in 1958. He initially followed the traditional path of the hunter-gatherers; however, in order to make ends meet he joined the Portuguese Army. After four years he left, married his wife, Julietta, in 1977 and fled with her to Omega in Namibia. In 1990 they both went to Schmidtsdrift, South Africa. Through wood carving, and creating beautiful bows and arrows among other things, he attempted to make a living. Today he is still illiterate. In 1994 he joined the Art Project. Differing from the other artists, he started off by working with oil on a flax canvas, and only later began working with the linoleum prints.

He prefers to use strong, bright colours and enjoys drawing animals such as antelopes, ostriches and snakes. His style is naive and playful. His signature is a combination of his initials, 'K' and 'C'.
