Baker, Kenneth

Born: 1926 Cape Town
Died: 1988 Cape Town

A painter of abstracted landscapes and seascapes.  Worked in oil, acrylic, pencil

and charcoal, made relief constructions with gesso, steel, Perspex and plastic.  1968-71 a series of Geonich/Geo structures; 1972-80 a series of constructions; 1981-84 a seriesof relief paintings with constructions; 1985-86 a series of reliefs with semi-precious stones.

Studies: Continental School of Art, Cape Town,under George de Leon; 1953-55 at the Contemporary School of Art, Cape Town, under Erik Laubscher (qv).

Profile: 1954-64 a member of the SAAA.  Until 1955 lived in Cape Town, then moved to Simonstown.  Married to Bernadine Biden (qv).

Exhibitions: Participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1954 in SA and at the Venice

and Sao Paulo Biennials; from 1955 held six joint exhibitions with Bernadine Biden (qv); 1960 and 1964 Quadrennial Exhibitions; 1968 Silberburg Gallery, Cape Town, first solo exhibition.
Award: 1963 Medal – Mention of Honour,

Sao Paulo Bienale.
Represented: Ann Bryant Gallery, East London; Hester Rupert Art Museum,

Graaff-Reinet; Pretoria Art Museum; SA National Gallery, Cape Town; University
